Purpose of IHMS Ed Fund
The purpose of the IHMS EDUCATION FUND (IHMSEF) is to enhance the education at Iron Horse Middle School by funding programs/areas that are not adequately staffed or supported by the district budget.
The IHMSEF is an affiliate of the San Ramon Valley Education Foundation. It has two primary purposes:
- Reduce class sizes: We reduce core academic class sizes and lower the student to teacher ratio by paying the district for additional "teacher sections", with each section being the cost to hire a teacher for one period. Through your generous donations, IHMSEF funded 7 additional sections in the 2014-2015 academic year to keep our class size in Core 6, Math 6, 7, and 8, and Science 6 and 7 to 30 students. Without these additional sections, class size average could reach 34-35 students. For 2015-2016, our goal is to fund 10 sections to reduce Science 8 to 30 students and to add 2 sections for our overcrowded electives.
- Technology support and upgrade: Based on input from the Principal and Site Council, IHMSEF purchases devices which enable students to access digital tools that help them research, take notes, create, and author as 21st century learners. This provides our students access to a much richer variety of educational materials while developing proficiency and keeping abreast of the latest technology. In the 2014-2015 academic year, IHMSEF funded the purchase of 36 new iMac minies for the computer lab. This year, IHMSEF will continue to replace older devices. We need to plan to regularly replace older devices; for example, we now have 135 devices that are at least 7 years old!
IHMSEF is a great opportunity for parents to directly support the quality of education. For the academic year 2015-2016, the suggested donation is $360 per student. Your most generous contribution will help sustain our school’s tradition of excellence.
